JavaScript Required for Sign-in to Hotmail

Last Updated: 11th August 2021

Have you ever tried opening a document in Word or Web App on SkyDrive, only to get a message that "JavaScript required to sign in"? Usually, this error is thrown when Microsoft Word downloads a .srf file (a server response file) instead of the required Word document from SkyDrive.

Unlike actual word documents, .srf files are not supported documents. Therefore, the error message usually means that some scripts have been blocked or your browser does not support JavaScript.

If you notice the JavaScript error, the best way to solve this would be to enable or turn on JavaScript in your web browser. The solution is applicable regardless of whether you are using Edge, Chrome, Firefox or any other web browser. Consider how you can turn on JavaScript in Chrome and Firefox.

How to Enable JavaScript in Chrome

  1. Open your Chrome browser. You should notice 3 dots implying a 'Customize and control' button. Click on the dots.
  2. Open the 'Settings' display. Click on the JavaScript setting. This should open the 'Privacy' section.
  3. In the 'Privacy' section, go to 'Content settings'. Choose 'JavaScript' then change its setting. Change the toggle, such that it allows all websites to enable and run JavaScript. JavaScript will then be turned on.

How to Enable JavaScript in Firefox

The Firefox browser is usually set to enable JavaScript by default. However, if your browser does not turn it on automatically, follow these steps to activate it.

  1. In the address bar of your Firefox browser, type 'about:config.' Then, press enter. Sometimes, you may encounter a warning message; if so, simply click on the 'I accept the risk' message.
  2. In the search bar, type 'javascript.enabled' and click enter. You will get a result for 'javascript.enabled'. Right click on it, then click 'Toggle.' JavaScript will then be turned on.

How to Enable JavaScript on Edge & Internet Explorer

  1. Click on 'Internet options'. Click on the Security tab then choose Internet zone.
  2. Scroll down the options and select the 'Custom level' option. This should open a new window.
  3. In the windows screen, look for the 'Active Scripting' option and check the 'Enable' circle that appears under it. Then, click Ok or Apply to restart the browser. And that's it! JavaScript will then be turned on.
